Trip to Indonesia

Last week I booked tickets to Indonesia!

So, I again join the stream of Bule looking for cheap hookers, pirate DVDs, crass Balinese tourist rituals, ego boosting cheers from kids and condescending mock empathy for really poor people. Let's face it, it's fucking great to be white in Indonesia!

Not that I am against this modern Meneer mentality, their cash goes a long way.

Well anywayz, in an effort to be 4 real this time round; back up my big mouth when it comes to all things RI; and rediscover my Madurese roots, I am going to learn learn Indonesian in Jakarta for a week (Madurese is way too tough for mere mortals like me!).

I still have to find a teacher, the less English the better.

For the other week, the plan is to go up to Medan and seek out THE best bika Ambon in existence. The stress on my heart from all that Bika Ambon will make other stresses (traffic, chatting up pretty warias and bird flu) pale into insignificance. That's the plan anyways.

Will probably end up in Kuta, learning Aussie, drinking Bali Hai. God I hate Kuta, it's like some kind of East West purgatory.

If anyone wants to meet up - drop me a line!

great!! you *must* meet my friend G in Jakarta... his family owns Rajawali pet store in Kelapa Gading. The man doesn't speak a lot of English (he sure understands), and he knows where to get the BEST bika ambon in Medan.

If you want to console yourself with bika ambon while in Jakarta, I suggest getting Bika Ambon Merdeka in Cempaka Putih (just a stone's throw away from Kelapa Gading - G can show you how to get there.) For about £2.50 you can stuff and chuff your way, and it comes in other varieties e.g. candlenut and cheese. Don't forget to give some to your hosts too :p

Enjoy your trip and post lots of pictures!! yee haa... good on you.

"Damn...I'll be in Central Java at that time; Salatiga more precisely; foothills of Mt Merbabu even more precisely - cool mountian air, clear blue skies, really, really cold morning baths..."

HAHAHA! :) Well you know what they say: whatever happens in the blogosphere, /stays/ in the blogosphere ;)

Yeh, we can meet up and survey the local Rawon, if ya want! Hope you know some good restaurants :)

[Btw, I am sure David is secretly pleased that one his students writes so much in English in her free time!]

David: No problem, it sounds like a nice way to recover from a school year of teaching in a hot, grimy Jakarta :)

Whilst I've 'bumped into' Denica a number of times on various blogs, and am glad she is spending her time reading and responding to English language blogs, I cannot speak for her own blog as it would be highly unprofessional for me to engage in reading my students' blogs, unless it was part of the curriculum.

So Denica need not fear or feel awkward at the prospect that one of her teachers is keeping an eye on her through cyber space.

You are free to continue venting your frustrations about your 'jayus' English teacher to your heart's content :-)

When you have Denica for a student, one needs a holiday in the mountains ha..ha.. JUST JOKING Denica.....just another jayus joke....
Okay, I'm signing off before I get myself into trouble.
Chow for now...

ha ha. dont you worry mr david, you'll find that the denica you know is nowhere near denica you dont know. ok that was a confusing sentence. perhaps you should spend more time in class teaching proper language structure, mr spongebob.

yeah right. as if you dont know me at all. your jayusness (and the fact that u're a narcissistic tacher)will and shall remain within the walls of ipeka. read: as a tool for me to bug you with. lol.

Hello John, thanks for dropping by at my blog and the nice comments. :)
It is very interesting to find out that you have Madurese blood, I assume? From where?
So, what cities have you visited in RI? I live in Semarang, Central Java. Have you ever heard it? :)
Love to read "It's great to be a BULE in RI" hahahahaha ... :)

Unknown said...

Hey thx Nana.

My great grandfather was half Madurese, half Jewish.

Yes I've heard of Semarang. Me and my sis met loadsa ppl from Semarang in Bali. Actually funnily, meeting those people was a big highlight of our week in Bali last year - they were so kind and friendly :)

Thx for the visit, keep writing!

You will have to post some pictures of Bali. I am one of the few Aussies that has never been, stranger still considering that we live in Indonesia!

Unknown said...

hi jen,

i have photos of the bali trip on the "My Photos" link on this page!

bali is pretty nice, once you get out of the real touristy places (like anywhere i suppose ;))

not only in Indonesia anyway, in s'pore Ang moh (bule) is king.. hehe
sumtimes I wonder, when person like me Indonesian wanted to work in Singapore or western country... we called immigrant
Bule works in Singapore or Indonesia, they called expat.. Sounds cooler than immigrant or work permit holder, immigrant sounds like we escape from war or crisis country...

that's v true ctrlz! maybe cos one lot are mostly forced to work abroad and the other lot choose to do it...

Unknown said...

True it does make me 1/16th Madurese - must be the best 1/16th I reckon :)

Unknown said...

I may go to Bandung. I've been there once, it was a blast!!

Ended up getting into a fight with a bar of Chinese ppl in the old part of town. But we ended up settling our differences with a drinking contest :)

I beat them all -- that's the Irish 16th in action :)
