Ba’asyir on "Modern" Punishment

Abu Bakar Ba’asyir explains how cheap Sharia amputations are compared to imprisoning people, and that Sharia punishment is the way of the future.

As the spiritual head of JI (Indonesian al-Qaeda group) involved in the Bali bombings, Abu Bakar Ba’asyir was jailed for 2.5 years, but exonerated of involvement last year.

Ironically though, if Indonesia did apply Sharia, I doubt Mr. Ba’asyir would have been released at all, he'd probably be 6 feet under.

Syariah law....this thing makes political scientists from overseas get a job easily.

Apologise for my sinicism...

For me, the aspiration of implementing syariah law is a symbol of frustration from the futile attempts made by reform governments to enforce law.

I think all moderate elements should be aware of this and one alternative way to make Indonesians believe that Syariah is unnecessary is to strengthen law enforments efforts.

actually, come to think of it, in the west many ppl also think the same wrt corporal punishment. the problem is that places like, pakistan and saudi especially have fired up the west's imagination wrt sharia.

really? 2.5 years?? that's all he's got???

i am ashamed of my own law enforcement, another reason why i have stopped considering on taking law here.

i wonder what would become of him if the country he offended was singapore or chine instead of indonesia. hmm.

Ah-ha! I'm surprised to know your review on this case, since I don't give a damn for those bombers. Same with the previous two above, I agree that law enforcement in Indonesia is bloody weak. Sigh.
