Sometimes the evil spirits can take the form of people you know. That's why you have to be careful

I.e. perhaps - don't blindly trust people, use your own judgement.

What's the difference between asking god for success for example and asking a spirit?

The spirit will take something from you in return, even though initially you seem to get what you want easily

I remember before I came to Indonesia I was pretty dismissive of people's beliefs in the supernatural. I still don't believe in a literal way like so many people seem to.

Yet there is something to what people say. Common sense couched in the supernatural.

Spirituality is a very human thing.

I'd like to say Indonesians are more spiritual than religious, considering how they like mysticism, i.e. easily persuaded to ask to the spirits. But I often see the people, here or in other places, have religion but not spiritual. What's your take on this?

ayu, i suppose i'm interested in spiritual stuff from an anthropological viewpt rather than anything else...

parvita, that's a good pt... blindly following traditions without any belief is common in the west for example, whereas over here there's almmost too much belief in the supernatural...

I spoke to a Balinese guy about magic a few weeks ago. He said magic was all bad - and that there was always a price to pay. When someone wants something good, for themselves or others, they simply pray - no need for magic.

meliko, i get that impression too... magic is always considered 'black' i suppose, and then you have the karma kicker.
